چکیده

Summary Age-related change in bone mineral density (BMD) varied according to skeletal site in Indian subjects. A larger proportion of subjects was classified as osteoporotic and osteopenic using the Caucasian database than newly derived peak BMD values at most skeletal sites. Results establish useful normative data for reliable interpretations of individual dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) values Introduction Osteoporosis is believed to occur at a relatively younger age in the Indian population. With increasing knowledge on significant differences in BMD between various racial groups, there is increased emphasis for the use of population-specific reference database. Methods BMD at multiple skeletal sites was measured using DEXA (Prodigy, Lunar) in 615 Indian women (20–86 years) and 489 Indian men (20–83 years). Best-fit models were drawn for each skeletal site. Osteopenia and osteoporosis diagnosis rates were calculated using Caucasian and derived Indian peak BMD values. Results Age-related change in BMD varied with skeletal site in both sexes. Peak BMD in women was observed between 31 and 40 years of age at the hip, spine, and radius 33% and between 20 and 30 years at the ultradistal radius. Peak BMD in men was attained between 20 and 30 years at the hip and radius 33% and between 31 and 40 years at the spine and ultradistal radius. A larger proportion of Indian subjects was classified as osteoporotic and osteopenic based on the Caucasian database than newly derived Indian peak BMD values at all skeletal sites except radius 33% and femoral neck in females above 40 years of age. Conclusion Results establish useful normative data for the Indian population for reliable interpretations of individual DEXA values.

Raised serum uric acid is associated with higher bone mineral density in a cross-sectional study of a healthy Indian population

Purpose Oxidative stress has been implicated as a fundamental mechanism in the decline of bone mass. Reactive oxygen species are reported to suppress osteoblast generation and differentiation and enhance osteoclast development and activity. Increasing evidence suggests favorable effect of serum uric acid (UA) on bone metabolism due to its antioxidant properties. Therefore, we investigated the a...

Serum ferritin levels and bone mineral density in the elderly

Background: Iron overload influences negatively on bone mineral density (BMD) but the results of studies regarding serum ferritin (SF) and BMD are conflicting. This study aimed to determine the association of SF and BMD in the elderly. Methods: All participants of the Amirkola cohort selected between 2011-2012, aged > 60 years were classified as high or normal (<200ng/ml) SF. BMD at femoral nec...

Evaluation of Bone Mineral Density in Perimenopausal Period

Background: The menopausal transition called perimenopause, happens after the reproductive years, and isspecified with irregular menstrual cycles, perimenopause symptoms and hormonal changes. Women going throughperi menopausal period are vulnerable to bone loss.Osteoporosis is one of the most common debilitating metabolic bone diseases ,especially in the women almostaround 50 years .This study ...

Bone mineral density by age, gender, pubertal stages, and socioeconomic status in healthy Lebanese children and adolescents.

Gender, ethnicity, and lifestyle factors affect bone mass acquisition during childhood, thus the need for age- and sex-adjusted Z scores using ethnic-specific data for bone mineral density (BMD) measurement. This study aimed at establishing normative data for BMD in healthy Lebanese children and adolescents. Three hundred sixty-three healthy children aged 10 to 17 years (mean+/-SD: 13.1+/-2.0) ...

Normative data and percentile curves of bone mineral density in healthy Iranian children aged 9-18 years.

UNLABELLED We provide the first reference values for bone mineral content and bone mineral density according to age and sex in Iranian children and adolescents. The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D was high, and levels of physical activity were low in our sample. Multiple regression analyses showed age, BMI, and Tanner stage to be the main indicators of bone mineral apparent density. PURPOSE N...
